AS PER SOLAS REGULATION XI-1/7, ANNUAL CALIBRATION OF  PORTABLE GAS DETECTORS ARE A MANDATORY REQUIREMENT.

All onboard Gas measuring equipment needs to be calibrated to ensure proper detection of the following:

  • Oxygen
  • Flammable gases
  • Hydrogen Sulphide
  • Carbon monoxide

MSC.1/Circ.1477 states that “It should be noted that, given a ship’s specific characteristics and operations, additional atmospheric hazards in enclosed spaces may be present that may not be detected by the instrument recommended to be selected by these Guidelines, and in such cases, if known, additional appropriate instruments should be carried.”

A calibrated gas detector will provide a precise and accurate reading of traces of toxic and undesired gases, and provide maximum safety to the user. If the detectors are not calibrated properly, the outcome can be very dangerous.

Gas detector calibration requirements

As per SOLAS XI-1/7 regulation, Portable gas detector has to be:

  • Four gas detector
  • 10 Hours of continuous operation
  • Waterproof
  • Dustproof
  • IP67 Protection
  • Capable of remote detection

As per Atmosphere testing instruments – SOLAS XI-1 Regulation 7

2.5. It is recommended that each ship should also be provided with calibrated and tested multi-gas detectors suitable for measuring the level of oxygen, carbon monoxide and other gases as appropriate, during the entry, as per paragraph 8.2 and 9.3 of Resolution A.1050(27). These may be the same instrument(s) used prior to entry into the enclosed space (other than colorimetric tubes referred to in section 4) or maybe additional instruments.

All portable gas detectors available onboard need to be tested and calibrated as per manufacturer’s instructions to make sure that the devices perform satisfactorily and adhere to the requirements.
